Golden Gloves

I had the opportunity to go with the DeMotte Boxing Club to the Golden Gloves on Thursday night. Quite a challenge...
It's a great opportunity to be able to go to an event like this. Other than at the Gym, I've shot boxing once before at a public event. You get one corner to shoot from, hopefully there aren't too many other guys jockeying for position. The people in the expensive, up front seats didn't pay to have you standing in front of the action. A bit of contortion-ism (is that a word?) is necessary to stay down and follow the action around the ring. No flash, under the ropes. The lights overhead are sodium vapor, the lights in the corners are halogen, and there are huge windows around the Armory letting in sunlight. That's one hell of a white balance mix. I think I did a pretty good job of balancing that, all things considered. I'm going to start making some notes about what went wrong and what I'll do to fix or prepare for the next time. Getting a good shot under these conditions is pretty rewarding. Well, at least I assume it is.

Seriously though, I had a great time and I hope working through challenges like this makes me a better photographer all around.
Of course for all the info on the DBC, shoot on over to the DeMotte Boxing Club's blog.
